Everyone surrounded Jana when she got back to the house and bombarded her with questions. “What did he say? Do you know him? Will he give us our horses back?”

When they finally paused long enough for her to answer, she said, “He said we might be able to get our horses back if we have the right paperwork. He said that it’s explained on the form, and he will come back later today and help us read it.”

Aunt Marie regarded her with astonishment for a moment, and then said, “Well, if he’s coming back tonight I guess we’d better find any paperwork we have that shows ownership. I’ll see if I can find ours. How about you, Zofie?” she asked Jana’s stepmother. “Do you know where the paperwork is for your horses?”

After everyone left, except Jana and her stepmother, Zofie asked, “Did he speak to you in Romani?”

“Yeah, I guess so,” Jana said. “I couldn’t believe it, either.”

“Do you know him? It seemed like you knew him.”

“No, I don’t know him. I just saw him once before. I told his fortune, that’s all. Do you remember when you, Anna, and I went into the village? It was the first time we saw the German soldiers. I guess he must have remembered me.” She wasn’t about to mention where, and when, she’d seen him on other occasions.
